Traditionally, Democrats tend to vote early or by mail, whereas Republicans generally prefer to cast their ballots on Election Day. This trend has led to occurrences like the “blue shift” or “red mirage” in swing states, where early counts show Republican leads that later shift towards Democrats as mail-in votes are tallied.
In 2020, early voting was pivotal in states like Georgia, where more than 2.7 million early ballots contributed to Joe Biden’s win over Trump. This year, Democrats are continuing to advocate for early voting, while Republicans, who have historically been skeptical of mail-in ballots, are encouraging their supporters to vote early as well. This has led to an increase in early Republican participation compared to 2020.
According to data from the University of Florida’s Election Lab, Democrats currently represent 39.9% of early voters, with Republicans making up 36.3%. As Election Day nears, both parties are closely monitoring these early voting trends to assess their prospects in the crucial swing states that could ultimately determine the election outcome.
