In a comprehensive 526-page report on the conduct of the elections, INEC highlighted the complexities encountered during the result upload process, attributing the initial delay to configuration issues in integrating the presidential election results into the system.
The commission clarified that while these configuration problems were swiftly addressed, further delays ensued due to technical glitches and the unexpected behavior of polling officers, who either switched off their devices or left their locations.
Moreover, INEC acknowledged the impact of external factors such as currency swap issues and fuel scarcity, which exacerbated the challenges faced during the elections.
The report underscored the resilience of the electoral process despite these hurdles, noting that over 25% of registered voters participated in the peaceful and orderly elections, characterized by transparent and credible counting, collation, and declaration of results nationwide.
However, the failure to upload polling unit results of the presidential election in real-time to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal emerged as a key challenge, prompting widespread commentary and affecting public perception.
Explaining the significance of the IReV portal in promoting transparency, INEC emphasized its commitment to integrity and accountability in the electoral process. The portal, which displays original polling unit result sheets, aims to enhance public confidence in the Commission’s result management process.
While the challenges encountered during the 2023 elections were unique, INEC reaffirmed its dedication to continuous improvement and transparency. Despite setbacks, the commission remains committed to upholding the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system and fostering public trust in future elections.
