Black Tuesday: As Former Edo NLC Chairman Slumps And Dies After Police Encounter

BENIN CITY – Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, former Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, has tragically passed away following a heated encounter with police officers at a roadblock in the Upper Sokponba area of Benin City…READ MORE…

Civil society organizations have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the police, demanding the identification and accountability of the officers involved in the incident.

Eboigbodin was reportedly stopped while driving with his wife on Monday. According to Rev. David Ugolor, Executive Director of the African Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), initial accounts from Eboigbodin’s wife indicate that police demanded his vehicle’s documents, which were confirmed to be in order. Officers allegedly raised concerns about discrepancies between the car’s glass engraving and its plate number. Despite providing explanations, his documents were seized, and a tow truck was called to impound his car, escalating tensions.

Eyewitnesses reported that Eboigbodin slumped at the scene amidst the altercation. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Witness accounts allege that the officers fled rather than offering assistance.

The Edo State Police Command has refuted claims of misconduct. Police spokesperson SP Moses Yamu stated that their account differs significantly from the version shared by civil rights groups, claiming that the wife’s statement to the police offered a different perspective.

Civil society groups, including ANEEJ and the Edo Civil Society Organizations (EDOSCO), have called for justice and reforms in the Nigerian Police Force. Rev. Ugolor hailed Eboigbodin as a devoted leader, describing him as a former NLC chairman and an advocate for worker and civil rights.

The incident has sparked outrage, with demands for transparency, accountability, and immediate justice echoing from labor unions, advocacy groups, and the public.
