This action was reportedly taken to prevent a potential disturbance in Bichi town, where the Emir was set to appoint a new district head.

While the Nigeria Police Force has not yet issued an official statement, sources indicate that the decision stemmed from intelligence that residents of Bichi were planning to disrupt the upcoming installation ceremony.

A confidential source told the Nigerian Tribune, “There were indications that the people of Bichi intended to impede the installation. Security forces acted promptly to ensure peace was maintained.”

The police presence also appeared to deter high-profile attendees from coming to Bichi for the event.

The district head’s appointment has stirred dissatisfaction among locals, who view it as a demotion for their town. Many believe that while other towns affected by the dissolution of the five Emirate Councils established by former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje have received second-class emir status, Bichi has been sidelined, reduced to a district head.

Some stakeholders believe the police’s actions were crucial in averting what could have escalated into significant turmoil.

As of 7 a.m. Friday, heavily armed police forces had blocked access at the Kofar Kudu entrance to the Emir’s palace, limiting movement in the area.

This situation highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding traditional leadership in Kano following the dissolution of the five Emirate Councils by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The reinstatement of Emir Sanusi II and the reconfiguration of traditional authority have resulted in rifts within the Emirate.
