At the flag-off ceremony held on Tuesday, Joseph Shazhin, the NPC Federal Commissioner for the FCT, explained that the VASA study aims to collect critical data regarding maternal and child mortality, focusing on the social and health factors that contribute to deaths of children under five and women of reproductive age.

Shazhin emphasized that the data gathered will help inform policy decisions and the development of health programs to improve maternal and child health in Nigeria. The survey follows up on findings from the 2023-2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey and will involve a random sample of households where under-five deaths have occurred.

The NPC official appealed to community and traditional leaders for their support in mobilizing communities and ensuring the smooth execution of the study. He also urged the public to cooperate with the survey teams, stressing the confidentiality of the process.

“In participating in this survey and sharing your experiences, you are directly contributing to efforts that aim to reduce unnecessary deaths and secure a healthier future for our communities,” Shazhin said.
