Breaking: Federal Government Invests ₦1.2 Billion To End Malnutrition Crisis

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to nutrition, maternal and child health, and sustainable financing.

Speaking at a stakeholder meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, Pate emphasized the government’s focus on transitioning from donor-supported programs to self-sustaining, locally driven solutions.

“This convening builds on the momentum of the Child Nutrition Fund (CNF) in advancing evidence-based nutrition solutions that will improve the health and well-being of millions of Nigerian women and children. Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government has committed ₦1.2 billion in domestic resources to this initiative. Additionally, 11 to 15 states have also pledged their support, demonstrating a whole-of-government approach to addressing malnutrition,” he said.

Professor Pate highlighted the role of the Nutrition Department within the Ministry in coordinating partnerships, aligning policies, and implementing nutrition programs.

He also noted that local manufacturers are increasing efforts to fill the gap left by dwindling global support.

“It is encouraging to see Nigerian manufacturers investing in the production of Multiple Micronutrient Supplements (MMS) and other essential pharmaceutical products. This ensures domestic availability while strengthening regional supply chains. This initiative aligns with the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII), which prioritizes sustainable health financing, private sector participation, and improved healthcare delivery,” he stated.

The Minister also credited the Child Nutrition Fund and its partners for helping reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates.

“The CNF has been instrumental in scaling up nutrition interventions, with the support of UNICEF, the UK Government, the Gates Foundation, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, private sector actors, and global philanthropists. I especially appreciate Spencer F. Kirk, Managing Director of Kirk Humanitarian, whose donation of six million bottles of MMS has significantly strengthened efforts to improve maternal nutrition and child survival,” he said.

Pate reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to long-term investments in health and nutrition, aimed at enhancing human capital development.

“The inclusion of MMS in the Essential Medicines List, expansion of maternal and child health programs, and increased domestic financing highlight meaningful progress. Under the visionary leadership of President Tinubu, we are dedicated to ensuring the health and well-being of all Nigerians,” he concluded.
