Senator Natasha’s Suspension Sparks Outrage As PDP’s Maku Calls For Her Return

Speaking in an interview, Maku, a former Chairman of Warri North Local Government Council, emphasized that the Senate lacks the legal authority to impose such a lengthy suspension. He called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene urgently to prevent the National Assembly from facing public disrepute.

Describing the six-month suspension as excessive and inconsistent with the principles of fair hearing and freedom of speech outlined in the 1999 Constitution, Maku questioned the Senate’s approach in handling the matter.

“The Senate, as a respected institution, should not be perceived as biased or unjust. Denying Kogi Central its due representation undermines democratic principles,” he asserted.

Responding to claims by the Senate Leader that Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for breaching the Senate’s Standing Orders of 2023 (as amended), Maku argued that freedom of speech is a fundamental right, emphasizing that the Nigerian Constitution holds supreme authority in public affairs.

Citing the 2018 Court of Appeal ruling in Senator Ali Ndume v. Senate, Maku stressed that the legislative body lacks the power to suspend a senator beyond a reasonable timeframe—typically not exceeding 14 days—as it directly affects the constituents’ rights.

“The National Assembly has an obligation to uphold Nigeria’s democratic image globally by ensuring fair treatment of all legislators,” he stated. “The people of Kogi Central must not be left without representation in the Senate.”
