Governor Okpebholo’s Strategic Response to Uromi Killings is Critical to Preventing Reprisal Violence
The tragic events of Thursday, March 27, 2025, in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, where several travelers were gruesomely killed, have shaken the soul of Edo State and, by extension, the nation. At a time of rising ethnic and regional tensions across Nigeria, such incidents do not remain local — they reverberate nationally.
But beyond the understandable outrage, what has become even more critical is how leaders respond. And in this regard, Governor Monday Okpebholo’s approach stands out as strategic, proactive, and designed to contain further escalation, particularly the threat of reprisal violence.
Let us examine this systematically.
1. Immediate Review and Action: Signaling Responsibility
The Governor’s first response came after a review of the preliminary report of the incident. He did not delay or deflect blame. Instead, he took ownership of the situation as the Chief Security Officer of the state and made immediate decisions that set a tone of zero tolerance for illegality and impunity.
The suspension of all illegal vigilante groups — “operating under whatever guise” — sends a direct message that there will be no unofficial security activity tolerated within Edo State’s jurisdiction. This is not just administrative action — it is a confidence-building step meant to calm fears that rogue groups can operate unchecked.
2. Suspension of Security Corps Commander: Institutional Accountability
By also suspending the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (Rtd.), the Governor emphasized institutional responsibility. While the vigilante group in question was not registered under the corps, the move signals a desire to plug all gaps in oversight and restore public trust.
In volatile times, citizens want to know that someone is in charge — and that someone is taking action. The Governor’s decision here reinforces that the security apparatus in Edo is being sanitized from the top down.
3. Clarification of the Illegality: Separating State from Criminal Actors
The statement further clarified that the local vigilante group involved was “never profiled or registered with the Edo State Security Corps”. This distinction is important. It isolates the act from the state’s sanctioned security efforts and makes it clear that the killings do not reflect the values or vision of the Okpebholo administration.
This separation of state authority from criminal impersonators is a vital narrative — especially as tensions could lead to ethnic profiling or retaliatory attacks. The Governor’s communication is measured but firm: those involved acted outside the law, and will face justice.
4. Ongoing Investigations and Arrests: Justice in Motion
So far, 14 suspects have been arrested, with an active manhunt underway for others. Importantly, this investigation is not being kept in secrecy. A special team set up by the Inspector General of Police is handling the case, demonstrating intergovernmental cooperation and transparency.
The message is clear: the state is not covering up, nor is it dragging its feet. Rather, it is mobilizing resources at the highest level to ensure justice is not only done but seen to be done.
5. Outreach and Engagement: Cooling the Ethnic Temperature
Perhaps the most sensitive part of the crisis lies in the identity of the victims, many of whom were reportedly of Northern origin. It is in this light that the Governor’s engagement with the families of the victims, community leaders, and the Government of Kano State becomes not just symbolic, but strategic.
By reaching out to stakeholders beyond state boundaries, Governor Okpebholo is building bridges at a time when others might build walls. He is reaffirming the constitutional principle that every Nigerian has the right to live and work in any part of the country — a message that resonates deeply in a plural society.
6. Call for Calm and Reassurance of Justice
Finally, the State Government’s appeal for calm shows emotional intelligence. It acknowledges the grief of the moment but redirects it toward constructive justice, not destructive revenge.
“The State Government remains committed to ensuring that justice is done in a most efficient, transparent, and proactive manner.”
This is not just a promise. It is a positioning that seeks to stabilize emotions, prevent further loss of life, and promote national unity, even in tragedy.
In times of crisis, the instinct to act must be matched by the wisdom to lead. Governor Okpebholo has demonstrated both. By acting swiftly, communicating clearly, and upholding the rule of law, he is not only confronting the security threat head-on — he is preventing a larger, more dangerous national fallout.
What happens in Edo must not spark avoidable tension in Kano or Kaduna. What happened in Uromi must not become a wedge between communities. And thanks to the Governor’s approach, we are seeing a pathway toward justice — not vengeance.
Edo is hurting. Nigeria is watching. And thankfully, the response so far is giving hope, not heat.
