Billionaire Industrialist Dangote Proposes Construction Of Nation’s Largest Seaport

Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has revealed plans to construct what he describes as the “biggest and deepest seaport in Nigeria,” signaling a transformative step for the country’s maritime infrastructure.

According to iReporter Online, the industrialist confirmed in an interview with Bloomberg that he has officially submitted documentation to begin work on the proposed Atlantic seaport in Olokola, Ogun State. The ambitious initiative is expected to significantly ease the export of goods—including liquefied natural gas (LNG)—and further consolidate Dangote’s expansive industrial empire.

“We’ve filed the necessary paperwork last month,” Dangote disclosed. “It’s not about doing everything ourselves, but setting the pace to encourage other entrepreneurs to take bold steps in infrastructure.”

According to iReporter Online, the Olokola project marks a dramatic return for Dangote to the coastal site where he had once shelved plans for a refinery and fertiliser plant, following unresolved disputes with local authorities. He attributed his renewed interest to the leadership of Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, praising the enabling environment that now exists for large-scale development.

In a separate statement, Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of the Dangote Group, said the company also intends to export LNG from Lagos through an expansive gas pipeline stretching from the Niger Delta. “We know where there’s abundant gas,” Edwin said. “We plan to construct a major pipeline that will surpass current capacity, even exceeding Nigeria LNG’s operations.”

As reported by iReporter Online, Dangote’s strategic ventures continue to expand. In May, the billionaire noted that his firm is targeting $7 million in daily revenue from fertiliser sales within the next two years. By mid-August, Dangote Refinery is set to begin nationwide distribution of diesel and petrol, with 4,000 newly acquired CNG-powered tankers boosting its distribution capability.

In a related announcement on June 27, Dangote projected that Africa could achieve fertiliser self-sufficiency within 40 months—a goal he believes will strengthen food security and reduce dependence on imports across the continent.
