1,000 Kilometers Of Hope: Ekiti Agency Rolls Out Massive Rural Road Revolution!

Ekiti State, through its Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), is currently working on 1,000 kilometres of rural roads out of the 8,103.32km scattered across the state, ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE.

Hon. Sunday Adunmo, the State Project Coordinator of RAAMP, revealed this during an interactive session with journalists in Ado Ekiti. He noted that Ekiti’s intervention on federal roads had reduced the overall length of such roads from 376.8km to 342.5km.

He explained that the state boasts a total of 862.2km of state roads and 1,301.1km of urban roads — all crucial to market access and agricultural development.

The agency, ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, has also prioritized backlog maintenance for 250km of roads, with 131.5km already under construction.

The first of three phases, spanning 65.15km, is underway and includes both state and local roads where state resources are insufficient.

For spot improvements alone, 450km of road designs have been completed and will be awarded once the 250km backlog is fully addressed.

Speaking on the impact, Adunmo highlighted how the road projects are transforming Ekiti’s agricultural landscape. “Since road construction began, we’ve seen a surge in new markets, faster access to trade centres, and increased interest in farming.

The improved connectivity between farms, urban roads, and federal highways is saving farmers valuable time and reducing insecurity,” he said, ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE.

He criticized the federal government for years of neglect, stating that most federal roads in the state were built for vehicles weighing no more than 20 tonnes but are now being damaged by articulated trucks exceeding 60 tonnes.

Adunmo stressed that the state government cannot fund major repairs due to the federal government’s policy of not reimbursing states for work on federal roads.

As a stop-gap, he said, the state government is now constructing alternative routes to ease movement until the federal roads are properly fixed.
