According to the agency’s latest hydrological forecast, increased rainfall could trigger inland flooding along major river channels during the period, prompting calls for urgent preparedness by state governments, emergency management authorities and residents living in vulnerable communities.

According to Ireporter Online, the advisory was issued by the Director-General of NiHSA, Arc. Umar Mohammed, who warned that communities in affected areas should take precautionary steps to reduce the impact of possible flood incidents.

The agency identified Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Edo, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Lagos, Niger and Plateau states as areas currently classified under medium flood risk.

NiHSA further revealed that 16 hydrological monitoring stations across the country have been designated as high-risk points, indicating the possibility of rising water levels and increased flooding in surrounding communities.

The agency cautioned that without timely intervention, some communities within the affected states could experience significant flooding, with public infrastructure such as schools, healthcare centres, markets and other essential facilities potentially affected.

Mohammed urged relevant authorities at the federal, state and local government levels to strengthen their emergency response plans and intensify efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.

He explained that NiHSA releases its Annual Flood Outlook at the beginning of every year to provide early flood predictions, risk assessments and vital hydrological information to help authorities prepare ahead of the rainy season.

The Director-General noted that the forecasts are designed to support effective planning, early intervention and coordinated responses by government agencies and emergency management organisations.

In response to the current flood risks, Mohammed advised state governments, emergency agencies and residents in flood-prone communities to pay close attention to early warning alerts and take necessary safety measures.

He called for improved flood monitoring systems, activation of evacuation strategies where required, and increased public awareness campaigns in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

The NiHSA boss stressed that early action, proper coordination and proactive measures remain essential in reducing the impact of flooding as the country enters the peak period of the rainy season.
