“INEC Sounds Alarm: Early 2027 Campaigns Illegal, Politicians Risk Sanctions!”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a strong caution to political parties and individuals indulging in premature campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that such actions are a clear violation of the Electoral Act.

According to IReporter Online, the Commission expressed deep concern over a recent wave of public declarations and subtle campaign activities by some politicians already jostling for positions, even though the election is still over a year away.

Speaking on behalf of the Commission, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, clarified that no official timetable or schedule has been released for the 2027 elections.

Therefore, no political party is permitted to hold primaries or nominate candidates at this stage.

“To that extent, party primaries have not been held, and no political party has nominated candidates for the next general election,” Oyekanmi stated.

He acknowledged that while public discourse on political futures is not prohibited, there is a legal distinction between political conversation and actual campaigning.

He warned, “Any open campaign or canvassing for votes for the 2027 General Election is not only premature but violates the Electoral Act.”

According to IReporter Online, Oyekanmi cited Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, which stipulates that public campaigning is only allowed 150 days before polling day and must cease 24 hours before election day.

He also referenced Section 95(1), which mandates that all political campaigns must be conducted in strict accordance with rules set by INEC.

He further disclosed that all political parties were formally reminded of these legal boundaries during INEC’s last quarterly consultative meeting and are expected to adhere strictly to the law.

According to IReporter Online, INEC urged all political actors to respect the electoral calendar and refrain from actions that could undermine Nigeria’s democratic process.

The Commission emphasized that maintaining electoral discipline is essential to ensuring a free, fair, and credible election in 2027.
