Federal Government Sets To Transform Land Titling System, Unlocking Massive Economic Potential
As part of efforts to unlock the economic potential of land in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has announced plans to improve land titling to 50 percent within the next ten years, according to iReporter Online.
The minister in charge, Ahmed Dangiwa, revealed this during a workshop on land titling registration and documentation held in Lagos on Tuesday, according to iReporter Online.
Dangiwa explained that the initiative aims to modernize land administration and make land a viable asset for wealth creation, housing delivery, and inclusive growth, while states will continue to retain full control over land administration.
He noted that currently, over 97 percent of lands in Nigeria are not formally titled, limiting their use as collateral for loans and reducing their value in property transactions.
The minister further highlighted that states can now begin digitizing land registries, integrating geographic information systems, and adopting global best practices—an approach already implemented in Lagos State, according to iReporter Online.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised the federal government for this initiative, emphasizing that electronic land documentation is essential to reduce physical interference and secure land rights for the future.
Officials from several states, including Oyo, Imo, Kogi, Enugu, Kano, Bauchi, Adamawa, Abia, Osun, and Borno, attended the event, expressing their readiness to collaborate with the federal government to achieve the desired improvements in land titles across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
