Obi And NBA Slam AON Over Controversial Life Ban In Ibom Air Passenger Saga!

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) for imposing a lifetime ‘No Fly’ ban on Ibom Air passenger, Ms. Comfort Emmanson, due to alleged unruly behavior.

According to iReporter Online, Obi took to his X handle on Tuesday to criticize the harsh punishment, emphasizing that “the poor must not be punished while the powerful walk free.”

It was also revealed, according to iReporter Online, that Ms. Emmanson has been charged to court and subsequently detained.

Obi stated, “Yesterday, I sincerely apologized to Ibom Air and its crew for the unacceptable conduct of one of their passengers.

This morning, I woke up to learn that the passenger, the young Ms. Comfort Emmanson in her twenties, has been banned from flying for life, once again showing how our system works.”

He referenced the truth of Anacharsis’ words, “the law is like a spider’s web: it catches the weak, while the powerful break through with ease.”

According to iReporter Online, Obi described the decision as authoritarian and unjust, questioning the due process followed in reaching the sanction.

He lamented the disparity in how justice is applied, noting, “If this young woman, who indeed acted wrongly, now seeks to apologize, who will hear her cry in a country where the pain of the poor is invisible and the dignity of the less privileged is often disregarded?”

Similarly, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned both Ibom Air and AON for what it calls reckless actions violating Ms. Emmanson’s right to dignity.

NBA President Mazi Afam Osigwe faulted the imposition of a lifetime flight ban without a fair hearing, calling it heavy-handed and unlawful.

The NBA further condemned the public humiliation Ms. Emmanson faced when she was forcibly removed from the flight, stripped in public, and recorded, with the footage circulated online.

Osigwe stressed that “the power to suspend or restrict a passenger’s right to fly rests with the appropriate statutory regulator, not private associations or airline operators acting unilaterally.”

The NBA has demanded an independent investigation into the incident and pledged pro bono legal support for Ms. Emmanson, vowing not to stay silent while fundamental rights are trampled.
