Gombe State Launches Ambitious Cultural Revival with New Museum and Historic Site Restorations

The government of Gombe State has embarked on a significant cultural revival by initiating the establishment of a modern museum alongside the restoration of several historic landmarks across the state. This initiative aims to harness the economic benefits of heritage tourism and was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Exceeda Construction Ltd, a reputable heritage restoration firm. The signing ceremony was overseen by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi.

The project aligns with Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s vision to preserve the state’s cultural identity while utilizing its historical assets to foster sustainable development, create employment opportunities, boost local economies, and elevate Gombe as a distinguished destination for cultural tourism on a global scale.

Key heritage sites slated for restoration include the old Native Authority Works Department (Gareji), Gidan Magani, the Gombe Native Authority Secretariat (Beit el Mali), Tudun Hatsi Mosque, and the Old Staff Quarters of GSSS Gombe, among others. These buildings, many dating back to the colonial and pre-independence periods, will be restored and repurposed as educational and tourism centers, all while maintaining their original architectural integrity and character.

Speaking at the event, Professor Njodi highlighted the significance of these monuments as vital representations of the state’s history and cultural heritage, emphasizing that their restoration is essential not only for safeguarding the past but also for inspiring future generations and positioning Gombe as a vibrant hub for culture and tourism.

The Commissioner for Information, Culture, and Tourism, Honorable Mijinyawa Tilde, described the MoU as a pivotal moment in the cultural renaissance journey of Gombe State. Representatives of Exceeda Construction Ltd, including Architect Huraira Umar Baba, Engineer Sa’adatu Lawal Rumah, and Barrister Yusrah Yusuf, assured that the project would uphold the highest standards, with a strong commitment to historical authenticity and sensitivity to the local context.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by key state officials, including the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Zubair Muhammad Umar, the Principal Private Secretary to the Governor, Professor Muazu Shehu, cultural advocate Alhaji Yaya Hammari, and Permanent Secretary of Special Services & Political Affairs, Alhaji Salisu Adamu Sambo.

This landmark initiative builds on recent recognition by the United Nations, which declared the Mbormi Tomb in Funakaye Local Government Area an international monument. During a recent visit to Gombe State, UN Assistant Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohammed Fall, expressed admiration for the state’s cultural heritage and pledged support for revitalizing its historic sites.
