Akwa Ibom Assembly Breaks Silence on Rumoured Probe of Ex-Gov Udom Emmanuel

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has firmly denied claims circulating in certain media outlets suggesting it is investigating former Governor Udom Emmanuel. Deputy Speaker Kufreabasi Edidem clarified in a statement issued in Uyo that no committee has been constituted to probe the ex-governor.

Edidem explained that during the House’s plenary on August 7, a lawmaker, Uwem Imoh-Ita, representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, raised a matter of urgent public importance regarding the non-payment of Coconut Plantation workers for seven months. In response, the Assembly set up an ad hoc committee to investigate the wage delay and report its findings within one month.

He stressed that the matter was unrelated to any probe of the former governor, describing the media reports as speculative, unfounded, and misrepresentative of the House’s official position. The Deputy Speaker urged journalists to verify information from authentic legislative sources before publication, warning that inaccurate or sensational reporting undermines public trust in democratic institutions.

Edidem reaffirmed the legislature’s commitment to transparency and accountability, while cautioning against distorting facts for headlines, adding that journalism remains a noble profession that demands adherence to ethical standards.
