NAMA Launches First Comprehensive Airspace Audit in 25 Years — According to iReporter Online

The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has embarked on a far-reaching audit of the Kano Flight Information Region (FIR), marking the first such exercise in over two decades.

According to iReporter Online, this initiative represents a major step toward enhancing operational efficiency, safety performance, and compliance with international aviation standards.

The audit, which began on Tuesday, is a self-assessment aimed at evaluating NAMA’s readiness for the upcoming Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) Certification by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), as well as the ICAO Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP) Coordinated Validation Mission (ICVM) and the Regional Office Safety Team (ROST) Mission.

It also seeks to examine key areas such as Air Traffic Services (ATS), Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) systems, Aeronautical Information Management (AIM), and Search and Rescue (SAR) operations.

In its report, iReporter Online highlighted that the audit will span Nigeria’s four major international airports — Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt — in addition to Enugu, Maiduguri, and various state and private aerodromes.

The inspection will cover technical facilities and infrastructure critical to Nigeria’s airspace management.

Describing the audit as a pivotal move, NAMA Managing Director Farouk Ahmed Umar said it signals a proactive and transformative approach to strengthening Nigeria’s aviation systems.

“This is more than a compliance measure; it’s a comprehensive review that sets the tone for future improvements in safety, accountability, and innovation,” he stated.

According to iReporter Online, Umar also emphasized the importance of stakeholder cooperation throughout the process and noted that the FIR Audit Committee — led by Ahmad Abba, Director of Special Duties — has been inaugurated to oversee the initiative.

The committee comprises experts from key operational departments, who will collaborate closely with regulators and frontline personnel to ensure a transparent and effective audit.

Umar further stressed that the outcome of this initiative will reinforce Nigeria’s credibility on the global aviation stage and showcase its leadership in airspace management across Africa.
