Brace For Impact! FG Sounds Flood Warning Across Northern Nigeria

The Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Center has issued a red alert for nine Northern states, warning of possible severe flooding between August 25 and 29, 2025, due to anticipated heavy rainfall across key regions.

According to iReporter Online, the alert was communicated in an official circular signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department.

The circular cautioned that the likelihood of flooding in the affected areas has significantly increased due to the forecasted weather patterns during the specified period.

The states listed on red alert include Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, and Adamawa.

According to iReporter Online, the Center has urged local authorities and stakeholders in these regions to intensify monitoring efforts, remain vigilant, and promptly report any emerging flood-related incidents through established communication channels.

In particular, Adamawa and Katsina states were flagged for having the highest number of high-risk towns. In Adamawa, the towns of Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo are under close observation, while in Katsina, communities such as Katsina town, Kaita, and Bindawa are on high alert.

Other flood-prone areas identified in the report include Gwaram in Jigawa, Nafada in Gombe, Ngala in Borno, Sumaila in Kano, Anka in Zamfara, Makira in Sokoto, and Azare and Jama’are in Bauchi State.

According to iReporter Online, this is not the first time the Center has raised such concerns.

A similar advisory was issued earlier in the year, warning communities along the flood plains of the River Niger to prepare for potential evacuations due to rising water levels.

As flooding remains a recurring seasonal threat across Nigeria, the Ministry has reiterated the importance of early response mechanisms, community-level awareness, and coordinated action among federal, state, and local emergency management agencies.
