Tinubu Inks Landmark Aviation Deal In Brazil — New Era For Air Transport Begins

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday began a historic two-day state visit to the Federative Republic of Brazil, during which Nigeria signed a landmark Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) with South America’s largest economy.

The agreement is set to significantly deepen cooperation between the two countries, particularly in the aviation sector.

According to iReporter Online, President Tinubu was warmly received in Brasília by his Brazilian counterpart, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, in a ceremony that highlighted the mutual respect and growing diplomatic ties between the two nations—both recognized as the largest economies in their respective continents.

A key highlight of the visit was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding formalizing the BASA, which will facilitate direct air connectivity between Nigeria and Brazil.

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Olorogun Festus Keyamo SAN, signed the agreement on behalf of the Nigerian government, while Brazil’s Minister of Transport, Silvio Costa Filho, signed for his country.

The ceremony took place in the presence of both Heads of State, underlining the strategic importance of the deal.

According to iReporter Online, Brazilian President Lula da Silva praised the agreement, noting that it opens the door for deeper collaboration not only in aviation, but also in agriculture, infrastructure, and other key sectors.

He emphasized Brazil’s readiness to work with Nigeria in building lasting economic and diplomatic partnerships.

The BASA is expected to catalyze trade, tourism, investment, and cultural exchanges between Nigeria and Brazil.

He is scheduled to meet with the President of the Brazilian Senate, the President of the Chamber of Deputies, and the President of the Supreme Federal Court.

These meetings are designed to strengthen institutional ties and explore additional avenues of bilateral cooperation.

The President’s delegation includes several senior cabinet officials, such as the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Onoh Ojukwu; the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari; and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, among others.

The ongoing visit reflects a shared vision by both countries to build a future based on mutual growth, strategic engagement, and global relevance.
