Tears And Chaos: 30 Killed, 40 Injured In Deadly Niger Tanker Explosion
According to Ireporter Online, tragedy struck in Niger State on Tuesday as a petrol-laden tanker exploded along the Agaie–Baddegi Road, claiming the lives of at least 30 people and leaving 40 others severely injured.
The deadly incident occurred around 11 a.m. near Essa village, shortly after Agaie. Reports indicate that the explosion was triggered when residents attempted to scoop fuel from the overturned tanker. Eyewitnesses recounted that most of the casualties were among those gathering petrol from the spillage before the sudden blast engulfed the area.
Confirming the incident, Comrade Farouk Mohammed Kawo, Chairman of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) branch of NUPENG in Niger State and National Ex-Officio member, described the tragedy as deeply devastating and regrettable.
The unfortunate explosion has once again drawn attention to the recurring menace of fuel-related disasters in the country. This comes barely weeks after another petrol tanker accident caused a midnight inferno along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway, leading to multiple casualties and extensive property damage.
According to officials, that incident, which occurred around 1 a.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, involved a 33,000-litre tanker that lost control due to overspeeding before overturning and bursting into flames. The spokesperson of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed that the fire quickly spread, destroying nearby vehicles and power installations.
Authorities have since urged motorists and residents to exercise extreme caution around accident scenes involving fuel tankers to prevent further loss of lives.
