Omotola Reveals Why She And Genevieve Were Banned From Nollywood
Veteran Nollywood actress Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has opened up about the ban imposed on her and several leading actors by film marketers in 2005, describing the experience as a significant turning point in her career. According to reports, she spoke about the matter during an interview on Yanga FM Nigeria.
Omotola revealed that the restriction affected eight prominent actors at the time, including herself, Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Nouah, Jim Iyke, Stella Damasus, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Nkem Owoh, and another industry colleague. The actors were barred from collaborating with certain marketers, which limited their participation in movie productions.
While the marketers claimed that the ban was due to a perceived negative influence on the industry, Omotola suggested that the real reason stemmed from their advocacy for higher standards and improved quality in filmmaking—an approach that reportedly clashed with some individuals controlling production and distribution at the time.
The duration of the ban varied among the actors. Some were reinstated after about a year, but Omotola’s case lasted longer, which she attributed to her decision to skip a reconciliation meeting arranged by the marketers. She noted that missing the meeting worsened her standing with those enforcing the ban.
During the period she was unable to work freely in Nollywood, Omotola diversified her career, venturing into music by releasing her debut album and exploring business opportunities outside the entertainment industry, including property investments.
Reflecting on the experience, Omotola emphasized that the period of restriction helped her grow creatively and professionally. She described the episode as a push to explore new paths rather than dwell on circumstances beyond her control.
Recalling the incident, she stated, “The first 8 were me, Genevieve, Ramsey Nouah, Jim Iyke, Stella Damasus, RMD, Nkem Owoh, and one other person. We were 8, they just banned us.”
