NFF Blasts Racist Abuse Of Okoronkwo Before WAFCON Clash

According to Ireporter Online, the controversy arose after reports of a theft at the Super Falcons’ Marriott Hotel in Casablanca, where cash belonging to members of the Nigerian team was stolen. Moroccan authorities swiftly arrested the suspect, who returned the stolen money in full before being sentenced to six months in prison.

Despite the prompt action taken by law enforcement, Okoronkwo became the target of racist comments and offensive emojis from some social media users, prompting the football federation to issue a strong statement in her defence.

The NFF described the online attacks as unacceptable, stressing that the actions of one individual could not justify directing racist abuse at a Nigerian player.

The federation noted that the theft case had already been resolved through the legal process and insisted there was no basis for the discriminatory comments aimed at the Super Falcons forward.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare, dignity and safety of all members of the national team, adding that the squad remains united and focused despite the online hostility.

The statement also emphasised that the incident would not distract the team from its objective of defending the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.

Nigeria, seeking a record-extending 11th continental crown, will begin its Group C campaign against tournament debutants Malawi at the Al Medina Stadium in Rabat, with kick-off scheduled for Tuesday night.
