A Disservice To Nigerians’ – Tinubu Issues Warning To Opposition

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cautioned opposition parties against attacking the 2026 Electoral Act, describing such actions as harmful to Nigeria’s democratic development. Speaking on Friday at the 4th Elective National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that persistent criticisms from the opposition were misleading and counterproductive.

According to official statements, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to democratic principles and credible elections, stressing that while constructive criticism is welcome, constant attacks on the law constitute a disservice to the Nigerian people. Addressing party delegates at Eagle Square, Tinubu highlighted that the Electoral Act was not arbitrarily imposed but resulted from a comprehensive legislative process that involved public participation.

“It is public knowledge that the processes leading to the amendment of the 2022 Electoral Act passed through legislative scrutiny, including public hearings. The Electoral Act was passed by the National Assembly, elected by the Nigerian people in accordance with the Constitution,” he stated.

Tinubu further argued that criticisms portraying the law as anti-democratic disregard these procedural safeguards and risk undermining public confidence in the electoral system. According to him, the Act reflects a national effort to strengthen electoral processes and should not be reduced to a tool for partisan rhetoric.

“The Act reflects our collective quest as a nation to strengthen our electoral system and consolidate democratic rule,” the President said.

His remarks come amid heightened political tension and accusations from opposition parties that recent developments, including defections to the ruling APC, could weaken democratic competition. However, Tinubu dismissed what he described as deliberate mischaracterization of both the Electoral Act and his administration’s broader intentions, insisting that constructive criticism, rather than distortion, is essential for national progress.
