Key Facts About The Trump Press Gala Sh**ting Incident
According to Ireporter Online, United States President Donald Trump and other high-profile guests were evacuated on Saturday night after gunshots were reported at a high-profile media gala in Washington, D.C., triggering panic and a rapid security response.
The incident occurred during the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents’ Association at the Washington Hilton Hotel, shortly after the opening remarks. Witnesses and AFP reporters present at the venue reported hearing gunfire, prompting heavily armed security personnel to rush the stage area where President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other officials were seated. They were swiftly escorted to safety as security operatives secured the ballroom.
Guests dressed in formal attire were instructed to take cover beneath tables as chaos erupted inside the venue. The event was subsequently suspended, with attendees later evacuated to the hotel lobby and outside the building. Authorities confirmed that no guests or dignitaries sustained injuries during the incident.
Preliminary reports indicate that a lone armed suspect breached a security checkpoint located near the ballroom entrance at approximately 8:36 p.m. local time. The individual was allegedly carrying multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. Law enforcement officers engaged the suspect in a brief exchange of gunfire before he was subdued and taken into custody.
A Secret Service officer was reportedly struck by a projectile on his protective vest and was taken to hospital, where he was said to be in stable condition. The suspect, who was not shot, was also taken to a medical facility for evaluation before being placed in custody. He is expected to be arraigned in federal court on Monday.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that a long gun and shell casings were recovered at the scene, adding that investigations and witness interviews were ongoing to establish how the suspect gained access to the venue.
Authorities have not officially released the suspect’s identity, but media reports identified him as a 31-year-old man from Torrance, California. Officials believe he may have been a guest at the hotel. He is currently facing federal charges, including use of a firearm during a violent crime and assault on a federal officer with a dangerous weapon, with additional charges possible as investigations continue.
Former President Trump described the suspect as acting alone, while suggesting the motive remains unclear, referring to him as a “sick” individual. Security procedures at the venue have also come under scrutiny, with questions raised about how weapons were brought into the hotel despite screening measures at the ballroom entrance. Authorities have launched a full review of surveillance footage and security protocols.
The incident has reignited discussions on security at high-profile political and media events, especially in light of previous assassination attempts targeting political figures in the United States.
