Nigeria Hints At Better Power Supply As TCN Unveils Expanded National Grid Capacity

Speaking during his first town-hall meeting with staff at the company’s headquarters in Abuja, Abdulaziz described his reappointment by President Bola Tinubu as a renewed mandate tied to higher expectations under the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the power sector. He noted that the agenda demands practical and measurable reforms aimed at improving electricity delivery and ensuring a more dependable power industry for Nigerians.

Highlighting key achievements under his leadership, Abdulaziz disclosed that Nigeria’s transmission grid capacity has grown significantly from about 5,000 megawatts in 2015 to over 8,700 megawatts currently. He attributed this progress to sustained infrastructure investments, including the installation of multiple power transformers and the execution of several 330kV and 132kV transmission projects across the country.

He further explained that TCN’s expansion efforts have been strengthened through partnerships with international development agencies such as the World Bank, African Development Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency, and the Agence Française de Développement. According to him, these collaborations have supported major rehabilitation and expansion programmes within the transmission network.

Abdulaziz also revealed that the company installed more than 82 transformers within a 23-month period, including 15 high-capacity 300MVA units deployed in the latter half of 2025 across key locations such as Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Enugu, Jos, Benin, and other strategic transmission stations nationwide. He added that several substations have also benefited from newly commissioned high-capacity transformers, improving grid stability and reducing system disturbances.

Looking ahead, the TCN boss emphasized that his second term will focus on translating infrastructure expansion into tangible benefits for Nigerians. He stressed that the ultimate goal is to ensure stable, reliable, and consistent bulk electricity supply to distribution centres across the country for onward delivery to consumers.

He commended the management team, unions, and staff for their dedication, noting that the progress achieved so far was driven by hard work and resilience. The Executive Director of Human Resources and Corporate Services, Abiodun Afolabi Fadahunsi, also highlighted that the town-hall meeting was designed to enhance communication, transparency, and alignment within the organization as it navigates the evolving power sector landscape.
