ALGON Supports Tinubu’s Re-Election Bid, Suspends Three Council Chairmen

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Ireporter Online, the endorsement was part of resolutions reached at ALGON’s 54th Expanded National Executive Council meeting held in Abuja, which brought together representatives from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, alongside past leaders of the association. The meeting was presided over by ALGON National President, Bello Lawal.

The motion backing President Tinubu’s re-election was reportedly moved by former ALGON President Alabi Kolade David and seconded by the Plateau State ALGON Chairman, Anani Hamisu Mohammed.

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, ALGON maintained that continuity in governance under President Tinubu would further strengthen grassroots administration across the country. The association noted that a second term would help deepen local governance structures and consolidate ongoing reforms aimed at improving service delivery.

ALGON further expressed support for the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stating that it had enhanced fiscal autonomy and improved the capacity of local councils to carry out their constitutional duties. The body added that stronger local governments would contribute to better democracy and more effective grassroots development.

However, the association also announced the suspension of three local government chairmen over alleged misconduct. Those affected include Zakari Iliyasu of Agwara Local Government Area in Niger State, who also serves as ALGON Chairman in the state; Abubakar Danladi Abdullahi of Kaiama Local Government Area in Kwara State; and Abba Shehu Tambuwal of Tambuwal Local Government Council in Sokoto State.

ALGON stated that the officials were suspended over allegations bordering on impersonation, actions deemed contrary to the association’s interests, and abuse of constitutional provisions. It warned ministries, agencies, state governments, and development partners against engaging the suspended officials in any capacity on behalf of the association.

The body emphasized that any dealings with the affected chairmen as ALGON representatives would not be recognized.

In the same development, ALGON passed a vote of confidence in its National President, Bello Lawal, reaffirming support for his leadership and commitment to unity within the association. Members pledged continued loyalty and restated their resolve to back initiatives aimed at strengthening local government administration nationwide.
