Nigerian Navy Nabs 13 In Bayelsa Over Illegal Mining Crackdown
According to Ireporter Online, the Nigerian Navy has intercepted two wooden boats carrying suspected illegally mined black sand in Bayelsa State and arrested 13 individuals in connection with the operation.
The operation was carried out by personnel of the Forward Operating Base Formoso as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal resource extraction and maritime crimes in Nigeria’s coastal areas. Acting on credible intelligence, naval operatives tracked and intercepted the boats at Lekeson and Liama communities in Brass Local Government Area, where large quantities of suspected illegally mined black sand were discovered on board.
Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, who confirmed the development in a statement, said the suspects comprised 13 crew members found aboard the intercepted vessels. He noted that the exercise reflects the Nigerian Navy’s sustained commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime environment and protecting natural resources from illegal exploitation.
According to him, illegal mining and related activities continue to pose significant threats to economic growth and environmental sustainability, stressing that the Navy remains resolute in maintaining security across Nigeria’s waterways. He added that the seized boats, recovered black sand, and suspects were subsequently handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Nembe Division in line with established procedures for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Folorunsho further reaffirmed the Navy’s collaboration with relevant security agencies and stakeholders to ensure the protection of maritime resources and the suppression of illegal activities within the country’s coastal regions.
