Filmmaker Jade Osiberu has advised couples against telling their spouses that they were never their ideal physical type, warning that such comments can leave lasting emotional scars and negatively affect relationships.

According to remarks shared by the filmmaker on X, many of the healthiest marriages she knows involve partners who did not necessarily fit each other’s youthful ideas of an ideal romantic match. She explained that such preferences are often shaped by societal beauty standards, popular culture and media influences rather than the qualities required for a lasting and fulfilling relationship.

Osiberu argued that physical attraction alone is an unreliable standard for choosing a life partner, stressing that compatibility, character and shared values are far more important in sustaining a successful marriage.

She maintained that the real problem is not marrying someone who does not fit a preconceived “spec,” but reminding that person that they were never considered one’s ideal type. According to her, such remarks can create an unhealthy power imbalance in a relationship, making one partner feel as though they “settled” while leaving the other feeling inadequate and questioning their worth.

The filmmaker described such comments as unnecessary and deeply hurtful, noting that even repeated compliments cannot erase the emotional damage caused by suggesting a spouse fell short of an earlier standard of attractiveness.

Reflecting on the issue, Osiberu said many beauty ideals formed during adolescence are based on superficial trends and unrealistic images promoted by society. She urged people whose preferences have evolved to acknowledge that their former standards were misguided instead of implying that their partners failed to meet them.

She further encouraged couples to speak about their partners in ways that uplift and affirm them, adding that those who have discovered deeper qualities in their spouses should celebrate how their understanding of genuine beauty and compatibility has matured rather than dwelling on outdated physical preferences.
