Nigeria’s Football Talent Shines As Three Stars Secure Overseas Transfers

According to reports, promising midfielder Popoola Ridwan has secured a permanent transfer to United Arab Emirates Pro League club Al Wasl from Hungarian side Kisvárda.

The 19-year-old midfielder earned recognition after impressive performances for Lagos-based grassroots club Seamoriow FC before making a move to Europe in February 2025 to join Kisvárda. His displays in Hungary quickly drew attention, with his maturity, defensive awareness and ability to control the midfield earning him praise as one of Nigeria’s emerging talents.

Al Wasl, an eight-time UAE league champion, will now rely on Ridwan’s qualities as the club prepares for the upcoming campaign.

His former club celebrated the transfer, describing it as a significant achievement for grassroots football development in Nigeria and acknowledging those who played a role in making the move possible.

Meanwhile, Nigerian striker Victor Mbaoma has joined Kenyan Premier League giants Tusker FC on a one-year contract after leaving Nigeria Premier Football League side Remo Stars.

The experienced forward enjoyed a productive season, scoring 14 goals and recording four assists before completing the move. He becomes Tusker FC’s first signing ahead of the 2026/2027 season.

Mbaoma, 29, is also familiar with East African football after a successful spell with Rwandan club APR, where he emerged as the league’s top scorer with 15 goals and helped the team secure domestic honours.

The striker revealed that Tusker’s ambition and plans for success were key factors behind his decision to join the club, expressing confidence in contributing to both domestic and continental achievements.

Tusker head coach Julien Mette also welcomed the Nigerian forward, describing him as an experienced player capable of making a positive impact at the club.

In another transfer development, Flying Eagles winger Tahir Maigana has completed a permanent move to Hungarian outfit Zalaegerszegi TE from Abuja-based FC Wireless.

The 18-year-old has signed a three-year contract with an option for an additional season after impressing with Nigeria’s U-20 national team.

Maigana played a key role in the Flying Eagles’ campaign at the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, where Nigeria won a bronze medal, before representing the country at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Speaking after finalising his move, the young winger expressed excitement about joining the Hungarian club, praising the welcoming atmosphere and professional environment.

He added that he is determined to repay the confidence shown in him by the club’s management through his performances on the pitch.

Zalaegerszegi TE chairman Andrés Jornet described Maigana as a highly talented player with significant potential, revealing that several clubs showed interest in the Nigerian youngster before he chose the Hungarian side as the next step in his development.

The latest moves highlight the growing presence of Nigerian footballers on the international stage as young talents continue to attract attention from clubs across different leagues.
