Geovany Quenda: Meet Chelsea’s New Signing Compared To Saka And Inspired By Ronaldo

According to reports, the Portugal Under-21 international has officially joined Chelsea following an agreement reached in March 2025, with the winger signing a long-term contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2034.

The highly rated youngster, who has frequently been compared to Arsenal star Bukayo Saka due to his style of play, was unveiled by Chelsea after completing his move to west London.

Born in Guinea-Bissau, Quenda relocated to Portugal at the age of seven and began his football journey at grassroots club Damaiense. His early years were marked by determination, with one memorable incident occurring when he arrived for training wearing jeans and shoes and was initially prevented from joining the session.

However, after displaying his natural ability by controlling a difficult ball and beating an opponent, coach Ana Correia stepped in and convinced officials to give the young talent an opportunity.

Quenda later moved to Benfica’s academy before eventually joining Sporting CP, where his development accelerated. Despite an informal agreement between Portugal’s top clubs to avoid recruiting from one another’s youth systems, Sporting secured his services after he impressed during a youth encounter against them.

Under coach Tiago Teixeira, Quenda’s talent continued to shine, with early signs suggesting he possessed exceptional qualities. Teixeira described him as one of the most gifted players to emerge from Sporting’s academy, recalling moments when the teenager displayed remarkable confidence and ability during training sessions.

Football observers have highlighted similarities between Quenda and Bukayo Saka, particularly in his explosiveness, creativity, ability to operate inside spaces, ball control and defensive work rate.

Former Sporting figure Roque praised Quenda’s qualities, saying his movement, crossing ability and final pass closely resemble Saka’s style, while describing him as one of the most impressive players of his generation alongside talents such as Lamine Yamal and Estevao.

Quenda made history at Sporting at a remarkably young age. By 16, he had already joined the first-team training group under former manager Ruben Amorim before breaking several club records.

He became the youngest player to score in the Portuguese Super Cup, the youngest Sporting player to start and score in the Champions League, and later surpassed Ronaldo’s record as the club’s youngest Liga Portugal goalscorer.

Ahead of his move to England, Quenda prepared extensively for the challenge by taking English lessons, following tailored fitness and nutrition programmes, and undergoing rehabilitation at Chelsea’s Cobham training centre after recovering from a foot injury that kept him sidelined for several months.

During his recovery period, the teenager maintained close communication with Chelsea officials, teammates and Portuguese internationals as he adapted to his new environment. He also attended matches at Stamford Bridge privately to familiarise himself with his new surroundings.

Reports indicate that Quenda is determined to secure regular first-team football at Chelsea and hopes to receive his senior Portugal call-up in the near future.

Although Chelsea’s squad is expected to return for pre-season preparations later, the young winger has already arrived early to begin training as he looks to make an immediate impact.

Capable of playing both as a winger and wing-back, Quenda is expected to provide Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso with tactical flexibility as the club continues reshaping its squad ahead of the new campaign.

Chelsea’s plans around the youngster have also influenced other squad decisions, with Alejandro Garnacho reportedly available for transfer while academy winger Jesse Derry is set to move to Sporting CP.
