Fresh Details Emerge From NSA Ribadu’s Meeting With U.S. Officials

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, on Monday hosted a high-level delegation from the United States government led by the Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, Frank Garcia, during a strategic meeting held at the Office of the National Security Adviser in Abuja.

According to Ireporter Online, the visit marked Garcia’s first official trip to Nigeria since assuming office on June 1, 2026. His visit is part of a broader West African tour scheduled to take him to Côte d’Ivoire and Mali between July 11 and July 18.

Speaking after the meeting, Ribadu disclosed that both sides reviewed the progress made under the Nigeria-United States Joint Working Group and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation on shared security concerns. He noted that the discussions further reinforced the long-standing partnership between both countries and highlighted their resolve to deepen dialogue and collaboration in addressing mutual security priorities.

In a statement shared via his official X account, the NSA said the engagement focused on consolidating the gains of the existing relationship between Nigeria and the United States while exploring additional areas of cooperation to enhance regional and national security.

Meanwhile, Ribadu has reiterated concerns over Nigeria’s porous borders, describing them as a major driver of terrorism, arms trafficking, smuggling, human trafficking and irregular migration across the country.

Represented by the Director of Policy and Strategy at the Office of the National Security Adviser, Ambassador Yazid Gbemudu, at the 15th National Security Seminar in Abuja, Ribadu stressed that Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national stability depend significantly on the effectiveness of its border security architecture.

Addressing participants at the seminar themed “Strengthening Nigeria’s Border Security Architecture for National Stability,” the NSA explained that while Nigeria’s vast land and maritime borders create opportunities for trade, regional integration and economic development, they also expose the country to a growing number of transnational security threats that require coordinated and sustained action.
