President Tinubu Calls On Reps To Amend Constitution Over State Police

According to Ireporter Online, the President described the proposed constitutional amendment as a key step in his administration’s efforts to reform the country’s security system and address ongoing security challenges.

Tinubu made the request through a letter forwarded to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, in which he transmitted the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Alteration) (State Police) Bill, 2026, for legislative consideration.

The President explained that the proposed bill seeks to provide constitutional backing for states willing to establish and operate their own police services as part of a broader security restructuring agenda.

He noted that the move builds on previous efforts by lawmakers to introduce state policing, adding that the Executive’s proposal includes measures aimed at ensuring a smooth transition to a dual policing system.

Tinubu stated that the legislation would serve as a crucial component of his administration’s strategy to reorganise Nigeria’s security architecture and improve the protection of citizens.

The President expressed hope that lawmakers would give the bill urgent attention and support its passage.

The development comes amid increasing calls from state governors, security professionals, and other stakeholders advocating for state police as a solution to rising insecurity across the country.

Supporters of the initiative believe decentralising policing would enhance intelligence gathering, strengthen community-based security efforts, and improve responses to crimes including kidnapping, banditry, and communal conflicts.

The proposal, however, must undergo the constitutional amendment process, including approval by the required number of state Houses of Assembly, before it can become law.

If successful, the reform will allow states to establish their own police forces to operate alongside the Nigeria Police Force under a proposed dual policing arrangement.

The Federal Government believes the initiative will boost internal security coordination and provide a more effective approach to safeguarding lives and property nationwide.
