An Account Of Three Investigations: How Tinubu Transparency Outperforms Atiku And Peter Obi
Here is a rundown of some of the major controversies surrounding the APC, PDP, and LP’s presidential candidates. The purpose of this post is to highlight the implications of these accusations and determine who among them has a better track record of transparency and accountability.
I came across this intriguing article detailing the allegations and scandals made about these aspirants and their responses to these alarming negative issues. The author raised salient points in the article.
Expectations:
Atiku Abubarkar:
His biggest albatross is the accusation that Atiku Abubakar sold Nigeria to himself during the unpleasant privatization era in which he was in charge. Atiku is reportedly outrageously wealthy today.
Obasanjo emphasized this by describing Atiku as worse than the Devil and the number one saboteur of the country’s common patrimony in his book My Watch , Obj practically BURIED Atiku’s reputation.
Peter Obi:
Peter Obi’s own accusation is that he invested government funds in family businesses, that he is the number one destroyer of the currency due to his imports, which drives away local productivity, and that he is too stingy and runs a one-man show.
Obi’s Pandora papers, on the other hand, are the former governor’s albatross; he was painted there as a local and international FINANCIAL CRIMINAL who should not have access to public funds.
Bola Tinubu:
Let us now consider Tinubu. The Jagaban carries the burden of a Godfather who dictates and controls his subjects whom he appoints as kings. Some claim he has Lagos in his back pocket.
Tinubu’s case, like the two previously mentioned cases of Atiku and Peter Obi, was used as a case study by the African Independent Television Authority, AIT, a powerful media organization similar to CNN in America and the BBC in London.
They aired a documentary called The Lion of Bourdillion, which had the support of the presidency and the ruling party at the time, the PDP.
This documentary was intended to finish Tinubu ahead of the presidential elections in 2015. They portrayed Tinubu as a warlord who owns 50% of everything good in Lagos and a ruthless kingmaker.
Reality:
So, what is the reality ? Atiku and Peter Obi refused to take Obasanjo and the Pandora Papers to court over a serious accusation that, in sane societies, one would never dare to make themselves public after such accusation, let alone run for a councillorship position.
Even to this day, they have refused to file lawsuits, even if it means exonerating themselves and restoring their public image.
Tinubu on his own part filed a N150 billion libel suit against AIT.
The AIT went on its knees for an out-of-court settlement, issued a public apology, and retracted the story.
Unfortunately, some people continue to associate Tinubu with such twisted narratives.
Indeed, reality and expectations are two entirely different things.
Many respondents have argued that Tinubu has demonstrated transparency with his own accusations, in contrast to Atiku and Peter Obi, who may have issues to hide and chose to ignore such serious accusations in order to prevent further damage to their reputations.
