Lawan Begs El-Rufai To Persuade Govs Over Stalled Constitution Review

In March, the National Assembly passed 44 bills to amend some key provisions of the 1999 Constitution and sent them to the 36 states for approval or rejection.

For any of the bills to pass, it must receive the support of at least two-thirds of the 36 Houses. However, it is believed that far fewer than half of the states have transmitted their responses.

Despite the approval of N1 billion for the amendment, only 11 state legislatures considered and voted on the 44 amendment bills. Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Kaduna, Katsina, Kogi, Lagos, Ogun, and Osun are among them. Twenty-five others voted against the bills.

The states threatened to take no action until four more amendment bills, including the establishment of a state police force and a state judicial council, were considered and passed.

The Senate President spoke as the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies opened the Distinguished Parliamentarians Lecture 2022. (NILDS).
