“2025 PDP Convention: Wike’s Allies Meet To Decide Next Move”
Fresh Tensions Erupt in PDP Over Planned Convention as Wike’s Camp Meets
A fresh wave of tension is brewing within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the planned national convention, with loyalists of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, scheduled to meet today to determine their stance ahead of the exercise.
According to IReporter Online, the latest friction stems from conflicting reports about the convention venue, with Wike insisting no formal decision has been taken by the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Appearing on a Channels Television programme, the minister dismissed claims of an emerging parallel convention, particularly in Ibadan.
“I am not aware that any convention is holding in Ibadan. As a NEC member, nobody has informed me, and no such decision has been voted on by NEC.
If a few people gather to make pronouncements, that cannot pass for NEC,” he asserted.
When pressed about attending the Ibadan gathering allegedly slated for November, Wike replied pointedly:
“When NEC meets, we will know, until then, I don’t know about Ibadan. Nobody has agreed on that.
So, how can you say I am planning a parallel convention? Planning to do what?”
According to IReporter Online, the remark adds fuel to speculation that Wike’s faction is uncomfortable with the process being led by the Convention Planning Committee, and may be exploring alternatives.
However, the PDP leadership has countered such narratives.
In a firm rebuttal, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, described the allegations as unfounded, reaffirming that the party is proceeding according to established procedure.
He explained that the National Convention Planning Committee, chaired by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, had already begun consultations and formed sub-committees, with broad representation across state chapters and key party organs.
“The party is ready for the national convention scheduled by NEC for Ibadan, Oyo State capital, on November 15 and 16, 2025,” Ologunagba confirmed.
He emphasized the transparency of the process, insisting that the Board of Trustees (BoT), Governors’ Forum, and founding members were all actively engaged.
According to IReporter Online, he dismissed the idea of a parallel convention as “pure speculation and political hallucination,” noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been involved at every step.
Amid the internal wrangling, Wike also addressed recent attacks on President Bola Tinubu, stating that although Nigerians are experiencing economic hardship, the reforms being pursued are necessary for long-term recovery.
He criticized former SGF Babachir Lawal for his comments against the President, attributing them to personal disappointment over political ambitions.
“Criticism is welcome, but insulting the President is unacceptable, to claim that the government is unapproachable is wrong,Governance isn’t about everyone meeting the President directly.
Ministers and advisers are there for a reason,” Wike stated.
According to IReporter Online, the unfolding situation highlights the deeper ideological rifts within the PDP, as party stakeholders prepare for what could be a decisive national convention.
