2027: APC Chieftain Basiru Dismisses Opposition Coalition As ‘Political Distraction
The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has dismissed opposition coalition groups ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying they have yet to demonstrate any meaningful electoral strength or achievements.
According to Ireporter Online, Basiru made this known during an interview on ARISE Television, where he described the emerging alliances as political distractions rather than credible alternatives capable of challenging the ruling party.
He argued that any politician or group genuinely interested in winning elections in Nigeria must align with the APC, which he described as the country’s most dominant and proven political structure. Basiru further maintained that aside from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the APC remains the only party with a record of victory in national elections.
He was quoted as saying that many of the self-acclaimed coalition movements have not proven themselves as serious electoral contenders, insisting that they currently lack the credibility to be taken as viable political forces.
His comments come against the backdrop of historical political realignments that led to the formation of the APC in 2013, when major opposition parties, including the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), merged ahead of the 2015 general elections. The coalition eventually produced Muhammadu Buhari, who defeated then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in a landmark election that marked the first democratic transfer of power from a ruling party to the opposition in Nigeria.
