2027: Politicians Begin Lobbying University Professors Ahead Of Elections

Igini made the disclosure while speaking at the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue, where he warned that political actors were already making moves within academic communities as preparations for the next general elections gather momentum.

According to IReporter Online, the former electoral commissioner alleged that politicians were reaching out to university professors and other academics, while also attempting to establish relationships with officials of federal agencies that could potentially be involved in the electoral process.

Igini specifically noted that some of the officials targeted could eventually serve as collation or returning officers during elections, raising concerns about the potential impact of such political approaches on electoral credibility.

He stressed that the success and credibility of elections in Nigeria and other African countries would depend significantly on the independence, professionalism and effectiveness of electoral management bodies.

Igini further urged Nigeria to draw lessons from the United Kingdom by assigning greater responsibility for the conduct of credible elections to the electoral management body and ensuring that its independence is adequately protected.

He also emphasised the importance of political parties and the judiciary in safeguarding democratic institutions, describing both as critical components of a credible electoral system.

The former INEC official maintained that stronger institutional safeguards would be necessary to protect the electoral process from undue political influence and ensure that future elections reflect the genuine choices of voters.
