2027: Power Struggle Deepens Within ADC Coalition Over Presidential Ticket

Fresh cracks have emerged within the newly formed coalition of opposition forces under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as the alliance splinters into camps supporting either former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi for the 2027 presidential ticket.

According to reports by the Daily Sun, there is also a smaller but vocal bloc rooting for former Rivers State governor Chibuike Amaechi to clinch the ADC’s presidential ticket.

Those rallying behind Atiku argue that he possesses the financial muscle needed to secure victory in any primary format—whether direct or indirect—and can efficiently mobilize resources across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.

Insiders disclosed that in May, Atiku’s strategists offered Obi the vice-presidential slot on the coalition ticket, banking on a repeat of their 2019 pairing. However, Obi reportedly did not give a definitive response at the time.

A top source within the coalition said,

“It would serve the South East well if Obi accepts to be Atiku’s running mate again. The idea is that Atiku would run for a single term and hand over to him, guaranteeing the region the presidency after decades of marginalization.”

Meanwhile, loyalists in Obi’s camp are championing a consensus that would see the South East produce the presidential candidate, framing it as a litmus test for the coalition’s commitment to fairness and equity.

Aides close to Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, revealed he remains hopeful the coalition will ultimately rally behind a consensus that favours him. During a recent discussion on X (formerly Twitter), Obi hinted that he would be willing to serve just one term if that becomes a coalition condition, pledging to use such a mandate to reposition the country.

A close ally commented,

“Obi has deliberately kept his options open. Whether he accepts the VP slot or pushes ahead for the presidential ticket will depend on how the coalition ultimately resolves its internal horse-trading.”

Nonetheless, the influential Obidient Movement maintains that Obi’s popularity transcends ethnic lines, arguing he is best positioned to mount a strong challenge against President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
