60-40 Formula Triggers Ticket Shake-Up In Kano NDC

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced a reshuffle of several candidates initially nominated by the Kwankwasiyya faction in Kano State, saying the move was necessary to honour a previously agreed power-sharing arrangement ahead of the forthcoming elections.

According to reports, a document endorsed by the Kano State Chairman of the party, Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, confirmed that the revisions were carried out to reflect an understanding reached between the NDC leadership and the Kwankwasiyya movement. The document was also forwarded to the party’s national leader, Seriake Dickson, Kwankwasiyya leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and the NDC North-West Zonal Chairman, Alhaji Muhammadu Rabi’u Sabo Bakinzuwo.

The updated candidate list approved Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani for the Kumbotso Federal Constituency, while Nasiru Ali Ahmed emerged as the party’s candidate for Nassarawa Federal Constituency. Other nominees include Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id for Kano Municipal, Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim for Doguwa/Tudun Wada, Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar for Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa, Ibrahim Bashir Bango for Sumaila/Takai, and Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata for Gwale Federal Constituency.

In addition to the federal constituency changes, the party also revised its State House of Assembly tickets covering Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.

Party officials explained that the adjustments were made to enforce an earlier agreement governing the distribution of elective positions and party offices between the NDC structure and the Kwankwasiyya bloc. Under the arrangement, the Kwankwasiyya faction was allocated 60 per cent of available positions, while the NDC retained 40 per cent.

However, concerns reportedly emerged within the party after leaders concluded that the initial list of candidates did not accurately reflect the agreed sharing formula, raising fears of internal disagreements that could affect preparations for the elections.

Reacting to the development, the party’s spokesperson, Comrade Ibrahim Waya, said the leadership acted swiftly to ensure strict adherence to the agreement and safeguard unity within the alliance. He stated that the 60-40 understanding between the party leadership and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso made the adjustments necessary to avert a potential crisis and preserve the integrity of the partnership as the elections draw closer.
