Abia Killings: Military Faces Pressure After Reprisal Threat-Concerns (Details)

The aftermath of the tragic killing of five soldiers in Aba, Abia State, by gunmen during a sit-at-home order marking Biafra Day has prompted calls for restraint from military authorities in their response. Key figures such as the lead counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and other political voices in the region have urged for calm and professionalism to avoid further violence.

Ejiofor, in a statement from Owerri, distanced IPOB from the attack and emphasized the importance of distinguishing between criminal elements and peaceful intentions. The PDP echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for security forces to adhere to professional engagement rules.

The situation in Aba remains tense, with increased military presence and ongoing investigations. Ejiofor condemned the attack and urged for a thorough investigation while cautioning against punishing innocent civilians in any reprisal actions. Ude Oko Chukwu, a former deputy governor of Abia State, also expressed shock over the killings and appealed for restraint to prevent collateral damage to innocent citizens.

Similarly, Hon. Obinna Ichita condemned the attack and urged against violence, urging military leadership to ensure personnel adhere to acceptable rules of engagement. The PDP, through its acting state Publicity Secretary and Vice Chairman, condemned the incident and pleaded with the military to discern perpetrators without harming innocent citizens.

Abia State Commissioner of Police, Mr Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, assured that the law would take its course on the perpetrators and urged residents to cooperate with security agencies while moving about their lawful businesses without fear of molestation.
