AFCON23Q: Peseiro Reacts To Nigeria’s Loss To Guinea-Bissau

Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro believes his team was unlucky to lose a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at home to Guinea Bissau.

Guinea Bissau, ranked 118th in the world by FIFA, defeated the star-studded Super Eagles 1-0 on Friday to take the lead in Group A of the 2023 Africa Cup qualifiers.

Peseiro attributed Nigeria’s fifth defeat to bad luck.

“We missed many goals. We could have been here for another hour and not score. Sometimes it happens in football,” the disappointed Portuguese coach said.

“I am not happy of course, I am sad, like my team, but they did the maximum.

“If you play like we played, you can beat any team, not only Guinea Bissau.”

Peseiro also questioned the refereeing, claiming that the Eagles had at least two penalty appeals turned down, and that the Egyptian referee did not allow enough extra time despite lengthy stoppages during the game.

Both teams will meet again on Monday at the Estadio 24 de Setembro in Guinea Bissau as the qualifying series continues.

Guinea Bissau’s Djurtus (Wild Dogs) now lead the qualifying group with seven points from three matches, while Nigeria dropped to second place with six points.

Sierra Leone is third with two points, while Sao Tome and Principe is last with one.

The top two teams will qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup, which Cote d’Ivoire will host in January 2024.
