Afenifere Reacts To Tinubu’s Ministerial List

This criticism was expressed by Afenifere in a statement issued following a meeting held at Chief Ayo Adebanjo’s residence in Ogun State.

Afenifere referred to Tinubu’s extensive list of ministerial nominees as “most bizarre” and irresponsible, as conveyed in a statement released to the media by the organization’s Secretary General, Chief Sola Ebiseni.

The statement from Afenifere read, “Afenifere condemns, as most unconscionable, that a government seeking understanding and sacrifices from the citizens after abruptly removing petrol subsidy and implementing other haphazard economic policies, would present such an unprecedented massive list of 48 ministers and other political appointments for appeasement and legitimacy.”

Afenifere noted that it was bewildering that the majority of Nigerians, who are focused on making a living amidst challenges, were witnessing opulence and irresponsibility displayed by their political leaders.

The group expressed its disappointment that the parliament, which should have held Tinubu accountable, appeared powerless “in the face of this executive recklessness, which has led the helpless people to perceive no difference and take to the streets praising unconstitutional power seekers.”

“In this transitional phase of the country’s political life, the pretensions and hypocrisy of those who have often paid lip service to progressive values are now exposed as power-hungry individuals who disregard the welfare of the people,” the statement highlighted.

On Monday, the Senate confirmed 45 out of 48 ministerial nominees submitted by President Bola Tinubu. However, the approval for the nomination of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Deputy Governor of Taraba State Sani Abubakar Danladi, and former Executive Director of Business Development at the Nigeria Import and Export Bank Stella Okotete from Delta State was deferred.

The confirmation of other appointments followed their screening by the Committee of the Whole, chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on the Senate floor.
