Anambra 2025-Elections: APC Must Respect Zoning-Rules, Says Amaefuna (Text)
A key figure in the Anambra State All Progressive Congress (APC), Mr. Pope Amaefuna, has cautioned the party against fielding a candidate outside the southern senatorial zone, warning that it may disrupt the state’s zoning arrangement.
In an interview with journalists in Awka, Amaefuna emphasized that the easiest way for the APC to lose the state in 2025 would be to select a candidate from a zone other than the South, where the current governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, is also serving his first term.
Amaefuna stated, “The politics of Anambra State has enjoyed relative stability, equity, and fairness, thanks to the adoption of the zoning principle. Major political parties have acknowledged this power rotation formula, as seen in past elections. If the APC fails to field a strong and popular candidate from Anambra South, the party can kiss its governorship aspirations goodbye, as such a move would truncate the remaining tenure of Anambra South.”
He also pointed out that fielding a candidate from another zone could lead to claims of an eight-year tenure instead of four, which he argued would be unfavorable for Anambra’s political stability. Amaefuna warned against those advocating for no zoning, stating they risk sabotaging the party’s chances.
According to Amaefuna, “The Anambra State APC can only win the 2025 governorship election if we unite behind a strong candidate from Anambra South with the capacity, structures, and grassroots following to match APGA at the polls. Those working against the zoning formula should be identified and punished by the national working committee of APC.”
He concluded by urging the party to come together and make a strong statement in 2025, emphasizing that betraying its own candidates is not an option.
