Another Jailbreak Attempted After Kuje’s Incident – Aregbesola Speaks

Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Minister of Interior, has revealed that another jailbreak attempt was made following the incident at the Kuje Correctional Facility in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), but the perpetrators were killed in the process.

Aregbesola stated this during the weekly Ministerial Briefing hosted by the Presidential Communication Team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He also stated that the level of security, including those driven by technology, erected around the nation’s correctional facilities has made escaping jail more difficult.

Aregbesola, who refused to reveal the location of the attempted jailbreak, stated that all inmates in the country have had their biometrics captured, making it impossible for any escaping inmate to evade capture.

Following the attack on the Kuje correctional center in July of last year, over 400 prisoners went missing. After the prison was attacked, four inmates, a security guard, and several attackers were reportedly killed.

Following Kuje’s incident in July 2022, the Minister of Interior revealed there had been a new attempt to break into another of the country’s correctional facilities.

While he did not specify which of the country’s correctional facilities was affected, he blamed frequent jailbreak attempts on insecurity.

He said: “It is the season. Don’t say ha! I know you don’t want to hear it. Have we had what we are having in Nigeria today before? It is the season and it’s global.

“When things are hard, people who cannot manage their own stability resort to those type of things. You can’t say there is no terrorism in Nigeria, we are managing it. You can’t say there is no banditry in Nigeria, we are managing it. It is because of the level of insecurity in Nigeria and we are arising to it. It is as simple as that.”
