The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Abayomi Arabambi, has strongly criticised the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, labelling his recent single-term presidency pledge as a “dishonest strategy driven by desperation.”

Naija News recalls that Obi, while speaking during a live session on Spaces last Sunday, announced his plan to run in the 2027 presidential election, promising to serve only one four-year term if elected. The former Anambra State governor also hinted at possible alliances with other opposition parties to address Nigeria’s critical challenges.

However, reacting during a radio interview on Eagle 102.5 FM in Ilese Ijebu, Abeokuta, on Wednesday, Arabambi dismissed Obi’s pledge, describing it as lacking sincerity and substance.

He said, “That claim about running for just one term is purely deceptive. In Nigeria’s political history, has any president ever genuinely committed to a single term? After a year or two, the same chorus of ‘four more years’ begins. Peter Obi’s statement is inconsistent and outright dishonest.”

Arabambi went further to accuse Obi of being manipulative and insincere. “We know what Obi and his associates came to do. Claiming he will only serve one term is simply untrue. It’s impossible,” he asserted.

The Labour Party spokesperson also berated Obi’s leadership within the party, arguing it had failed to bring meaningful change. He said, “Obi claims he can fix Nigeria in two years, yet he couldn’t fix the Labour Party in six months. All he did was turn our party into a platform for his brand of institutional slavery. Where’s the evidence of his promises?”

Questioning Obi’s political allegiance, Arabambi branded him a serial defector without clear ideology. “This man moved from APGA to PDP and then to Labour Party. He’s a political scam. When the time comes, we’ll reveal everything,” he added.

On the proposed coalition involving Obi and other opposition figures, Arabambi made it clear the Labour Party would not participate, describing such alliances as driven by personal interests.

He concluded, “We are not considering any coalition. Tinubu, Atiku, Obi — they have all run this country aground since 2015. They are the same breed. They should all leave Nigeria’s political stage.”
