Earlier in October, the federal government announced the formation of a new committee to renegotiate the 2009 agreements with university-based unions. The committee has been given a three-month deadline to conclude the discussions.

The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, assured the public that the government is taking steps to prevent another strike by ASUU. She highlighted that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is focused on implementing reforms that will strengthen Nigeria’s economy in the long run, despite the current challenges.

ASUU recently issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government, demanding the payment of four months’ salary arrears from the 2020 strike, the transition of its members to the University Transparency and Accountability System (UTAS), and the settlement of outstanding earned allowances, among other demands.

Onyejeocha expressed optimism that the ongoing discussions would soon lead to a positive resolution.
