In a candid disclosure shared on the social media platform X on Tuesday, March 12, Mukoma Wa Thiongo exposed the painful truth about his father’s violence towards his mother. He recounted distressing memories of witnessing his mother seek refuge at his grandmother’s house to escape the abuse inflicted by Ngugi Wa Thiongo.

“Some of my earliest memories are me going to visit her at my grandmother’s where she would seek refuge. But with that said it is the silencing of who she was that gets me. Ok – I have said it,” Mukoma Wa Thiongo wrote alongside a newspaper article highlighting his mother’s ordeal.

Ngugi Wa Thiongo, revered as Kenya’s most prominent writer, was married to Nyambura in 1987, and they shared six children. However, their marriage was marred by detentions and exiles prompted by political turbulence in Kenya under the regimes of Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Moi. Nyambura passed away in 1995, with Thiong’o unable to attend her funeral due to his exile in the United States.

Following Nyambura’s death, Ngugi remarried Njeri, with whom he had two children before their separation last year. Ngugi, currently residing in California, USA, is battling kidney failure and undergoes regular dialysis treatments while being cared for by medical professionals.
