Barau expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for fulfilling the request, which reflects the desire of the people of Kano State. Maitama Sule, who passed away in 2017, made significant contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political development. His legacy includes roles as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and as the country’s first Federal Commissioner of Public Complaints.

The decision to rename the university comes amid the controversy surrounding the reversal of the renaming of Northwest University, Kano, by the Kano State Government in 2024, which had previously been renamed in honor of Maitama Sule. The renaming of the Federal University of Education is seen as an effort to immortalize his contributions and inspire future generations.
