Bayelsa Boils: Army Confronts Angry Youths Protesting Herdsmen’s Bloody Attack — Fear, Chaos Reign
Tension Erupts in Bayelsa as Soldiers Clash with Ijaw Youths Protesting Alleged Herdsmen Attack
A violent clash broke out in Kaiama, a community in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, on Thursday, as Nigerian Army personnel reportedly confronted protesting Ijaw youths demanding the removal of Fulani herdsmen from their farmlands.
According to iReporter Online, the protest was triggered by a recent attack on a local farmer, believed to be an indigene of the community, who was allegedly assaulted by suspected herdsmen operating around the farmlands surrounding Kaiama. The incident, which occurred earlier in the week, rekindled simmering tensions over land disputes, security concerns, and the destruction of crops by roaming cattle.
According to iReporter Online, hundreds of aggrieved Ijaw youths staged a peaceful protest, calling on the state government and traditional rulers to take immediate action by expelling the herders, whom they described as a growing threat to their safety and economic well-being.
However, the protest turned chaotic when troops, believed to be members of the Joint Military Task Force stationed in the area, intervened. Eyewitnesses claimed that soldiers fired warning shots into the air and used force to disperse the crowd, sparking panic and confusion.
“We were only protesting peacefully when the army came and started shooting into the air,” said one of the protesters, who asked not to be identified due to safety concerns. “One of our brothers was attacked on his farm and left for dead. Instead of addressing the real issue, the military is now turning their weapons on us.”
According to iReporter Online, the community has been on edge since the incident, with residents demanding justice for the attacked farmer and calling for a lasting resolution to the crisis between local communities and nomadic herders.
