We Lost Husbands, Now Our Dignity!’: Army Under Fire For Abandoning War Widows
Nigerian Army Under Fire for Neglecting Widows of Soldiers Killed in Boko Haram War
The Nigerian Army has come under increasing scrutiny following allegations of neglect and misconduct in its treatment of widows of soldiers who died fighting Boko Haram, with some of the affected women also accusing military officers of sexual harassment during attempts to claim their late husbands’ benefits.
According to iReporter Online, recent research by military sociologists has revealed disturbing patterns of institutional failure, showing that many of these widows are left to navigate complex bureaucracies with little or no support. The study, which focused on widows of both commissioned and non-commissioned officers who died in the ongoing insurgency in Nigeria’s northeast, highlighted an overwhelming absence of empathy and professionalism from the Army’s welfare structures.
Boko Haram, officially Jamaat Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati Wal-Jihad (JAS), and its more radical offshoot, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have waged a bloody insurgency since 2009, claiming over 36,000 lives and displacing more than two million Nigerians. The Nigerian Army, which has been at the frontlines of this asymmetric war, is now being accused of abandoning the families of its fallen heroes.
According to iReporter Online, widows participating in the study described a military system riddled with delays, red tape, and inconsiderate officials. Many widows reported not being informed about the benefits they were legally entitled to. Those who did pursue compensation often faced endless travel, incomplete documents, and outright indifference from military offices. Some even claimed that officers deliberately stalled the process, creating a frustrating and degrading experience.
One widow, speaking on condition of anonymity, described how a condolence letter—vital for accessing benefits—was delayed for over three months until she secured help from her late husband’s superior. Widows also reported threats of eviction from military barracks due to unpaid benefits, while others continued to live there in order to pursue their entitlements more effectively.
According to iReporter Online, the Nigerian Army currently provides a 60-month pension, burial costs, life insurance, and educational support for children. However, inconsistencies in payment timelines, lack of proper guidance, and absence of accountability mechanisms have rendered these benefits nearly inaccessible for many families. Widows are often forced to undertake long, costly interstate journeys to Abuja for yearly scholarship screenings—efforts that sometimes result in no payment at all.
The researchers argue that these bureaucratic challenges and the absence of institutional compassion have severely damaged the trust between the military and its personnel’s families. They warn that morale, recruitment, and retention in the Nigerian Army may suffer if widows continue to face such neglect and mistreatment.
To address the crisis, experts are calling for the decentralisation of the death benefit claims process and the establishment of dedicated support units to offer step-by-step assistance and redress mechanisms. They also emphasized the need to confront internal corruption and enforce professionalism across the military’s administrative ranks.
In a nation that asks so much of its soldiers, the bare minimum, they say, is to honor their memory by caring for the families they leave behind.
